If you have ever listened to or watched a sporting event, you’ll know how important the commentator (presenter telling you about the event) is to your understanding of what is happening.

Become an expert World Cup commentator with this fun activity!

Starter

Discuss the following with your class, group or in your pair:

  • What is a commentator?
  • How does a commentator talk?
  • Do you think sports commentators are important? Give reasons for your response.
  • If you could be a commentator for any sport or sporting event, which one would you choose and why?

Task two

Commentary on World Cup match between Argentina and France

In the packed stadium in Doha, the Argentina national football team and the France national football team produced a thrilling World Cup final filled with drama from start to finish. Argentina looked sharp early on, moving forward with precision and confidence while keeping France pinned back for long periods.

Their opening goal lifted the noise inside the arena and gave them clear control of the contest. France, however, refused to fade away and gradually fought their way back into the match with energy and determination. The closing stages became increasingly intense as attacks came from both directions and every defensive action carried huge importance.

During extra time, tired legs did little to slow the pace, with both teams continuing to chase victory with remarkable commitment. Supporters inside the ground were treated to an unforgettable football spectacle that will remain in World Cup history for many years.

Your turn

Now, imagine you’re a commentator for the FIFA World Cup 2026. Pick two national teams and write your own paragraph describing the game.

Try to include:

  • 1 metaphor
  • 2 examples of alliteration
  • 3 examples of football jargon
  • 4 examples of emotive language
  • 5 descriptive adjectives and adverbs

Once you have written your commentary piece, share it in your pair, with your class or your group.
